Saturday's Update

Well, the second surgery went well. We went in yesterday for a little more biopsy and to insert her chemo port into her chest.

She was in a lot more pain this time and it took so much longer for her to wake up and come home. The past few days have honestly been some of the hardest days of our lives. It is heart wrenching to see people you love in pain. I know you all can relate. That feeling of helplessness and loss of control stinks. It just literally about rips your heart right out of your chest. I've told Jessica so many times this week that I wished so badly I could trade her places and I would. But this test is hers.

People call and ask, "what can we do?" and all we can say is,
"What CAN any of us do?". We can do nothing.

But we know the Lord can. There comes a point when all you can do is turn it over to him and that's what we've done.

You never know what lies around the corner. Jessica has tremendous faith. She knows she is a daughter of God. She knows The Lord has a plan for her and is mindful of her. She is so blessed to have such a wealth of reserves of faith in which to draw from at this time. It will carry her through anything. We have no doubt.

So here is a cool little story to demonstrate some of the tender mercies and miracles already in play. Our Doctor, and the Surgeon, we found out, served on the High Council with David's Dad years ago. Both Doctors served as Bishop's at the same time in their stake years ago.

Our doctor is semi retired and serves in the Temple twice a week and he and his wife put Jessica's name on the prayer roll and have been fasting for her. Our Naturopathic Clinic (not members of our faith)......also fasting and praying daily for Jessica. They said when they got the results from her tests, they all wept. I mentioned the fasting and prayers from all the Young Women in our ward and when I got home with Jessica from the Hospital late last night, two meals had been brought in, our house had been cleaned from top to bottom, flowers had been brought, and someone had come and cleaned ALL my windows inside and out. The Cub Scouts have offered to plant our garden, and another person has taken into account that the younger three kids are feeling shoved aside and have offered up a little fun time away from the house where they can get some much needed attention. One family brought over an easter basket with a little easter hunt she can do from her bed. It was a treasure hunt that led her to open numbered gifts she could take with her to the hospital. Others have brought baskets with more of the same. How do you take that all in?

As a mom and a member of the church, this already has taught me two things:

1. I don't serve nearly enough. This experience has been inspiring to say the least. Just as soon as we are able, we will be WAY more engaged in looking for more ways to serve. The unique ways in which people think to plug in and help out has opened up a whole new perspective for me that I will never forget, and the Love and support that we feel from your prayers and physical acts of kindness is nothing less than inspiring. You have transferred the love of the Lord into our lives and We can say with certainty, it is buoying us up like you wouldn't believe.

2. We are experiencing First hand the power in prayer. We know there are hundreds of prayers being offered right now on Jessica's behalf and we feel it. It's amazing. A REAL almost tangible source of strength and peace I honestly didn't know someone could have in times like these. However, we feel lifted and strengthened and fully able to take on what keeps coming. We've had our tearful moments, and feeling helpless moments, but they don't last. We know the Lord is mindful of Jessica. He has a plan for her, and his will and his timing is perfect. We're good with that and definitely don't want to get in the way of That.

Thank you all of you for your phone calls, your prayers, your wonderful support, and ALL of your physical acts of kindness. It is HUGE to us.

PLease DON'T hesitate to call. Visits are okay as long as we can have family time from about 8:30pm on, we welcome your visits and calls. We know you all just want to help and you want to express your love to Jessica. Don't feel like you are putting us out, or like it is a burden for us to answer your calls. Phone lines should be more available now that this first week is over. We love you all. We appreciate what you do, and we hope you keep doing it for others in our midst who are suffering. There are so many.

Janet Thurgood
on behalf of the rest of us.
