Jessica went into the MISTI (Mountain States Tumor Institute)Clinic yesterday for some labs and blood work. While we were there we met a 38 year old man with colon cancer receiving his chemo treatments. He seemed so happy and full of life. He told us that he had been jet skiing, fishing, motorbike riding, camping and had done his best in the last year to force himself to live life.......and not just live it, but to enjoy it.
Two years ago, I had a life changing moment in my own life. It was significant enough to make me really think hard about my own mortality in this world. The afternoon I came home from the hospital, I felt like I was looking through an entirely different set of eyes, almost as if time was passing in slow motion. I was just so grateful to be alive and to have this time left to be with my family.
Up until the time that Jessica was diagnosed, we were as busy as ever. Focused on so many things with so little eternal relevance. It's funny how struggle and adversity at it's greatest point has the ability to align your focus back to what matters the most. I loved this video because it shows those moments in slow motion. When you are going through tough times, moments tend to slow down like this and become gems. All the clutter and irrelevance tends to weed itself out and perspective becomes so much more eternal.
Our goal with Jessica this summer is to get her up and out of the house and get her focus off of what is wrong and give her moments that will be her own little gems....Us too.
When you think about it, all that really matters is the relationships with the ones you love. Everything else is fluff. Most of it can be easily weeded out.

Jessica and Janet-thanks for being such great examples for us all. We have missed seeing Jessica@ the PICU. We will be there on the 12th...one day after you:( please leave some of your remarkable faith there for us. Quincee enjoyed spending some time with you. ReplyDeletewhat a disappointment that we'll miss each other. It is so nice to be up there when a familiar face is there beside you. We will certainly be praying for you and for your Doctors. Tell Traejen he's a little hero.
Tell Quincee the visit was so great. it was energizing to Jessica. Quincee has such a fun personality. She helped put a smile on ALL our faces. Between her and Megan and Jessica, it was really about an hour and a half of giggling. That was a refreshing distraction.
